Emergency fund calculator: how much should you keep aside?

An emergency fund covers 3 to 12 months of essential expenses so a job loss or medical bill does not force you to sell investments or borrow.

How it is calculated

Needed = monthly essential expenses × months to cover. Self-employed people, single-income families and those with dependants usually aim for the higher end (6–12 months).

Keep it where it is safe and quick to access, such as a savings account, a sweep-in FD or a liquid fund.

Common questions

Where should I keep my emergency fund?
Somewhere safe and easy to withdraw: a savings account, sweep-in FD or a liquid / overnight mutual fund.
Should I invest my emergency fund in equity?
No. Equity can fall just when you need the money.
Does health insurance replace an emergency fund?
No, but it reduces how much you need for medical emergencies. You need both.
